Explore scales as organized note patterns and connect those patterns to the music you want to play.
Use a pattern, then make a phrase
Learn the major-scale spacing
A major scale follows whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half steps. Check the pattern slowly on the keyboard.
Change the tonal center
The white keys can support C major or D Dorian, among other modes. Emphasize the intended home note and listen to the relationships around it.
Improvise with a small set
Choose three notes from the scale and make a short musical idea. Change the rhythm before adding more notes.
A mode is not fully explained by saying “start a scale on another note.” The tonal center and supporting harmony matter. Use a repeated home note or chord to hear the character of a mode rather than only reciting a fingering pattern.
